Volunteer Outreach Youth Worker

The Outreach Youth Worker reports to the Bus Captain and is responsible for facilitating our award-winning multi-service mobile drop-in youth centre and outreach program, Project Reach Out (PRO). The Outreach Youth Worker will work weekend and after-hours with a team of staff, practicum students and volunteers travelling throughout the Tri-Cities and Ridge Meadows communities providing support and services to street involved youth. 

To qualify for this position, you MUST have the following:

  1. A valid and unrestricted class 5 driver’s license. ABSOLUTELY no N and no L on your licence.
  2. Valid First Aid/CPR and criminal record check
  3. Ability to work Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 3 pm to midnight.
  4. Ability to work in the Tri Cities and Ridge Meadows communities. 

Responsibilities

This position is specifically targeted at street entrenched and homeless youth ages 12 to 23.

  • Provide street outreach to youth;
  • Participate in partnered “walk-abouts” to identify/connect with street youth;
  • Provide crisis intervention when required;
  • Provide brief assessment support;
  • Provide referrals to community resources when needed;
  • Provide weekend follow up support;
  • Provide drug and sexual exploitation prevention and education;
  • Participate in all aspects of the program delivery;
  • Maintain data collection; including logging, stat keeping, tracking, and surveys;
  • Provide information on local resources and programs;
  • Collaborate with other youth serving front line workers/agencies.

 

Desired Knowledge, Education and Experience

  • Minimum Human Services diploma and/or related experience working with at risk youth;
  • BA in a related field would be an asset;
  • Street Outreach experience an asset;
  • Sound knowledge of adolescent development;
  • Ability to engage and motivate hard-to-reach youth;
  • Conflict resolution and mediation skills, Knowledge of youth issues, Sound problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to work as an effective and cooperative team member;
  • A valid CLASS 5 BC driver’s license with no restrictions;
  • Current Level 1 first aid certificate with CPR, or willingness to acquire same before being scheduled for shift work;
  • Current Criminal Record Check.

 

Working Conditions

This position is 100% in person and working on the front lines.  This position requires being trained to dive a community shuttle bus. This position involves working in various weather conditions and requires proper working attire (uniforms and PPE are provided).  Attendance at the office may be required from time to time. Travel may be required occasionally for this role.  Working outside of normal hours is required to attend meetings, events, and other essential duties of the role. Project Reach Out offers a unique front line street youth work experience and model of youth engagement. This position is part time Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 3 pm to 12 am: MUST be available for minimum 4 shifts per month. Traveling to the Tri Cities and Ridge Meadows communities is required. We meet in Coquitlam for the start of every shift.
